How Much to Tip an Uber Driver
Fifteen to twenty percent of the fare is where current guidance sits, matching the restaurant convention. On a $24 ride that is $3.60 to $4.80. On short trips the percentage stops meaning much, so a $2 to $3 floor takes over.
Rideshare tipping is more contested than restaurant tipping, and there is a specific reason for that: Uber had no tip button at all until 2017, and spent its first several years telling riders that tipping was unnecessary and built into the fare. A great many people formed their habits during that period, which is why you will still find riders who never tip and do not think of it as unusual.
The economics have changed since. Uber and Lyft take roughly a quarter to a third of each fare, and the driver pays for the car, fuel, insurance, maintenance and depreciation out of what is left. Tips are the one part the platform does not touch.
How the In-App Tip Window Works
Both apps prompt you to rate and tip immediately after the ride ends, but you are not locked into that moment. Uber allows a tip to be added for up to 30 days after the trip, and Lyft allows 72 hours through the app or up to 30 days on the website.
That matters because the post-ride screen is easy to dismiss by accident. If you meant to tip and swiped past it, open the trip in your ride history — the option is still there.
Cash is always accepted and many drivers prefer it, because it arrives immediately rather than in the weekly payout. If you tip cash there is no need to also tip in the app.
Where the Tip Prompt Sits Is Not Neutral
This is worth knowing before you dismiss another post-ride screen, and it comes from the delivery side of the same companies.
New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection found that DoorDash and Uber had engineered interface designs that reduced delivery workers' tip earnings by $550 million, largely by hiding or delaying the tip prompt so it appeared after the job rather than at checkout.
The city banned those designs. Local Laws 107 and 108 took effect on 26 January 2026, requiring apps to show a clear tip option before or at checkout with a suggested tip of at least 10%. Uber sued to block them and lost — federal judges denied the injunction on 23 January 2026. Tips per delivery then roughly doubled, from $1.18 to $2.29.
That is delivery rather than rides, and it is one city. But it establishes something general: how and when an app asks for a tip changes what workers earn by an enormous amount, and the default is not designed with the driver in mind.
When to Tip Above the Standard
The percentage works fine for a straightforward point-to-point ride. Several things reasonably push it higher.
Luggage is the main one. A driver who gets out, loads three suitcases into the boot and unloads them at the terminal has done physical work the fare does not price. Five to ten dollars for an airport run is the convention, regardless of what the fare came to.
Long airport pickups deserve more too. A driver who waited forty minutes in the airport queue to collect you was unpaid for that time. Late-night rides, difficult weather, help with a child seat, and a driver who kept the car clean and quiet when you clearly wanted quiet all fall in the same category.
Premium tiers — Uber Black, XL, Comfort — carry a 20%-and-up expectation, partly because the vehicle costs the driver more to run.
Common situations and what to leave:
- Short city ride, under $10 — $2–3 flat.
- Standard 15–30 minute ride — 15–20% of the fare.
- Airport run with luggage — $5–10, or 20% if the fare is large.
- Long trip over an hour — 15% is fine; the fare is already substantial.
- Uber Black, XL or Comfort — 20% or more.
- Driver waited for you — add $5 or more beyond the wait fee.
- Uber Eats order — tipped as a delivery, not as a ride.
Taxis and Black Car Services
Traditional taxi tipping runs at 15 to 20% of the metered fare — the older convention, and it has not moved.
In New York the card terminal in a yellow cab typically offers 20, 25 and 30% as its presets, which sits above the customary range. The custom option is there for a reason.
Black car and executive services usually add a gratuity of 18 to 20% automatically to the fare. Check the confirmation before adding more; a second 20% on top of an included service charge is a common and expensive mistake.
Airport shuttle drivers who handle bags are normally tipped $2 to $5 per person, flat rather than as a percentage.
Does Tipping Affect Your Rating?
Drivers rate passengers, and both ratings are hidden until each side has submitted, so a driver cannot see your tip before rating you. Tipping does not directly buy a better rating.
It affects something more practical. Drivers on both platforms see a passenger's rating before accepting a trip, and in areas where drivers can afford to be selective a reputation as an easy rider matters. Being ready at the kerb, keeping the car clean and tipping consistently is what a five-star passenger looks like.
None of that makes tipping compulsory. It is simply worth knowing that rideshare is a two-way marketplace rather than an anonymous transaction.
