How to Use This Chart
The tables below give the tip itself, not the total. Find the row closest to your bill, read across to the percentage you want, and that figure is what to add.
For bills that fall between rows, add two lines together. A $70 bill at 20% is the $50 row plus the $20 row, so $10.00 + $4.00 = $14.00. The same trick handles $135 ($100 + $35) or $245 ($200 + $45).

Which Column to Use
The percentage you want depends on the setting rather than on how the meal went. American table service sits at 18 to 20% for normal-to-good service, with 15% at the acceptable floor and 22 to 25% for service that stood out.
Counter service, where you order at a till and collect your own food, carries no such expectation — and the data backs that up. Only 25% of Americans say they always or often tip at a coffee shop, and 12% at a fast casual restaurant, according to a Pew Research Center survey published in November 2023.
Outside the United States the columns shift down considerably. In Germany, France, Italy and Spain the 10% column is the top of the normal range, and rounding up is the common practice.
Which column applies where:
- 10% — Europe, India, poor service in the US, very large group bills.
- 15% — the acceptable floor for US table service, and what most Americans report leaving.
- 18% — the current US default, and what most card terminals suggest first.
- 20% — good service, and the easiest to work out mentally.
- 25% — exceptional service, small bills, or a regular haunt.
Tipping on the Pre-Tax Amount
The chart works on the bill before sales tax, which is the conventional base in the United States. Tax is money the restaurant collects for the state, and the server had nothing to do with it.
In practice the difference is small. On a $100 subtotal with 8% tax, tipping 20% pre-tax is $20 and post-tax is $21.60. Plenty of people tip on the total because it is one step fewer, and no server has ever objected to the extra dollar.
Card terminals almost always calculate their suggested percentages from the post-tax total, which is worth knowing if you want to be precise. Tax and tip covers this in detail.
What to Tip by Service
The main chart answers how much on a given bill. This one answers how much in a given situation, for the services where a percentage of a restaurant bill is the wrong shape entirely.

Printing the Chart

This exists because the demand is obvious: people sell wallet-sized tip cards as physical products, which is a reasonable signal that a chart you can carry beats a chart you have to look up. There is no download, no email capture and no PDF to chase — it is the browser's own print dialogue.

What is a 20% tip on $50?
Ten dollars, for a total of $60. Twenty percent is the easiest tip to work out: find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then double it.
